A Beeswax candle ritual for the evening before a wedding or permanent commitment or as part of a Handfasting or wedding ceremony

The joining of the lights of two candles in a single flame is a potent symbol of unity in both formal and informal commitment ceremonies (and has become particularly popular in weddings in the US). This version of the ritual can be carried out privately by you and your partner as a way of affirming mutual commitment. It can be very helpful if you are having a big wedding and feel that you are losing sight of the reasons for the union amidst the frantic preparations. It can also be a simple way of marking your first evening as a committed or cohabiting couple if there has been no public acknowledgement of the event. This is a good rite to repeat periodically. You can also build it into your Handfasting or wedding ceremony.

You will need

A large natural beeswax candle; 2 smaller beeswax candles in separate holders.

Timing

The last time you meet before the marriage ceremony, or on your first evening together as a couple - or as part of the ceremony.

The spell

• You and your lover each take a separate smaller beeswax candle and light it, as you do so saying:

These are the qualities I offer to thee, as I reach forth to attain unity.

• Name the gifts you offer the other person in marriage or commitment.

• Both simultaneously light the large beeswax candle from each other’s candle, as you do so listing qualities you most value in each other.

• Extinguish the separate candles one after the other, as you do so, saying in turn:

I am no longer separate but willingly unite in love and fidelity, in trust and in harmony. Henceforth we two are one.

• Leave the large beeswax candle to burn down.
