Calling your love in the candle flame

Traditionally young maidens would stick entwined pins in a beeswax candle and call an absent or errant lover in the candle flame, demanding that he neither sleep nor rest until he returned to them. Gentler rituals in modern times build in the option of free will. For sometimes even if we can attract a person to us or persuade them to return whether by earthly or magical means, it may not ultimately bring happiness. A faithless or unwilling lover is not likely to whole-heartedly commit him or herself to a relationship.

The following ritual is especially potent when the crescent moon is just visible in the sky and the energies of attraction and especially for love are increasing.

·    In a sheltered place in a garden or on a balcony or by an open window, since it is said to be unlucky to view the crescent moon through glass, light a silver candle, the colour of the Moon and all lunar Goddesses.

·       Look at the Moon across the candle and holding a silver ring in your right hand, carefully without burning yourself pass it around the candle flame three times, saying the age old rhyme of fidelity:

Round and round the ring of truth,

Love in age and love in youth,

Love in sickness and in health,

Love in dearth and love in wealth.

·       Place the ring on your wedding finger and look into the candle flame, saying:

Silver of the Moon, as you wax and grow,

Let my lover come to me, if it shall be so.

·       If you are attracted to a particular person or are estranged, whisper the name into the flame or if your lover is as yet unknown say:

Though I do not speak your name,

I call you love in candle flame.

·    Place the ring on a piece of pink silk or velvet in front of the candle, surrounded by a circle of lavender or rose petals and leave your candle to burn though.

·    When it is gone, place your ring and lavender on the silk on a window ledge until the Full Moon. If you lover has not come when the Moon begins to wane, wrap the ring and lavender in the material and keep them in a drawer until the next Moon cycle when you can repeat the ritual.

·    In the meantime, make yourself happy in every way possible, so that when love comes it is a bonus and not your only reason for living.
